Today’s post is dedicated to one of the most 90’s gadgets imaginable.
The Pompeil Automatic Pasta Maker.
If you’re old enough to remember the 90s, you’ll remember it was the era of labor-saving devices that took up a ton of counter space. From breadmakers to salad shooters, this was the age of cooking in new and innovative ways that involved using significantly more white plastic products and electricity than ever before.
(That said, I’ll never part with my Sunbeam Steamer, which is still going strong 20 years later.)
The infomercial for the Popeil Pasta Maker is… quite a thing.
The ad doesn’t even try to hide how noisy this thing is. I’m also a bit suspicious of the claim that it can also make cookies and muffins.
The ad doesn’t mention the machine’s sausage making capabilities. This could mean that this incredible power was discovered later, or that tubular meat being pressed out of the machine didn’t make for good tv.
The price is the most astounding part. “4 easy payments of $39.99 (+ shipping)” OR one payment of $159.95! Adjusted for inflation, that’s $274.67 in 2019 dollars! A bit much for a Christmas gift, I think, no matter how festive you’re feeling.
Every era has “what were they thinking” kitchen gadgets, but I find this one particularly silly. I hope you did too!
